MSP360 Backup 6.0 brings two notable improvements to S3 backup — direct upload to Glacier and support for Amazon's latest Intelligent storage tier.
Support for S3 Intelligent-Tiering in MSP360 Backup 6.0
Amazon has recently announced its latest S3 storage class — S3 Intelligent-Tiering. It's primarily aimed at customers who want to automatically optimize storage costs when data access patterns change. For example, if you store some data under Intelligent-Tiering and you don't access that data within 30 days, Amazon will automatically move it from the default frequent access tier to the infrequent access tier. This approach is convenient if at the time of backup you don't know if the data will be frequently accessed.
However, please note that Amazon charges you a small monitoring and automation fee for Intelligent-Tiering. Because of this, Standard-IA is still a better choice for infrequently-accessed data if you want to optimize storage costs.
MSP360 Backup 6.0 provides the ability to back up data directly to the Intelligent-Tiering storage class. To do that, select the Intelligent-Tiering storage class on the Compression and Encryption step of the Backup Wizard.
Once you've finished configuring the backup plan, execute it and your newly backed up data will be stored under the Intelligent-Tiering storage class.
Direct Upload to Glacier in MSP360 Backup 6.0
Another S3-related improvement is the ability to back up data directly to the Glacier storage class instead of the previous approach where data would first be uploaded to S3 and then moved to Glacier.
To back up data directly to Glacier, select the Glacier storage class on the Compression and Encryption step of the Backup Wizard.
Once you've finished configuring the backup plan, execute it and your newly backed up data will be stored under the Glacier storage class.
Conclusion
MSP360 Backup 6.0 significantly improves S3 backup by introducing direct upload to Glacier and support for Amazon's latest Intelligent-tier storage class which automatically determines if the data should be stored under the infrequent storage tier.
