On the 4th April 2018, Amazon Web Services hosted an annual summit in San Francisco. This year Amazon has bolstered the security of its services and decreased prices for storage. We are going to overview main features, that were announced during the keynote.
Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (Z-IA)
Amazon Web Services has announced a new storage class within their Amazon Simple Storage Service. It's neatly called Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access. From now on, there will be 4 different Amazon S3 storage classes:
- Amazon S3 Standard - the most expensive class to store data in, the fastest for the recovery
- Amazon S3 Standard Infrequent-Access - less expensive than S3 Standard, has 30-days early deletion fee. This storage class was originally introduced for files, that don't need to be accessed that frequently
- Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access - that storage is less expensive than the previous class, has all the same characteristics except for availability. Amazon S3 Z-IA stores files in only one physical data-center and has 99.5% availability for data instead of 99.9% in Amazon S3 Standard Infrequent-Access and 99.99% availability in Amazon S3 Standard
- Amazon Glacier - the cheapest to store in, the most expensive and the longest to retrieve your data from and has 90-days early deletion fee
The price of the new Amazon S3 Z-IA will be 20% less than for already cheap Amazon S3 Standard IA storage.
MSP360 products will soon fully support new storage class.
Amazon Secrets Manager
There was a number of big security breaches within AWS. To stop data from leaking, Amazon has announced the launch of Secrets Manager - the tool that will store encrypted keys on a dedicated hardware. Amazon Secrets Manager is basically a storage for encryption keys, keys to applications, services, databases and other credentials, which can and should be used on the application level via API.
